TITUSVILLE, Florida – Four people died after a violent collision between a rental car and a pickup truck on State Road 405 (Columbia Boulevard) at Sisson Road just after 6 p.m. on Monday. April 2, 2018, in Titusville, Florida.
Titusville police say that the preliminary investigation reveals the driver of a white Mitsubishi sedan, Adam P Stephenson, 30, of Bristol England, was traveling west on SR 405.
Stephenson then made a left turn at the intersection of Sisson Road into the path of an eastbound black Ford F-250 pickup truck. The heavy-duty truck violently impacted the passenger side of the small sedan.
All four occupants of the sedan were pronounced deceased at the scene by arriving medical personnel. The passengers have been identified as Maryanne Stephenson, 29; Brian Stephenson, 66; and Sheralyn T. Stephenson, 56 – all of whom are from Bristol, England.
The driver of the Ford pick up truck, James D. Walsh II, 28, of Port St. John, Florida, was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the Stephenson family had just left the Kennedy Space Center in their rental vehicle and were attempting to navigate back to their rental house in Davenport, Florida at the time of the crash.
GPS in the vehicle was instructing a “U-turn” at the intersection, most likely because of an earlier crash with road blockage on SR 407 – which was the original GPS route from the Space Center for their trip back to Davenport.
Thousands of visitors were leaving Florida’s Space Coast during that time following a SpaceX launch that occurred at 4:30 p.m.
