Brevard Federation of Teachers Union Endorses School Board Candidates

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida – The Brevard Federation of Teachers union announced its endorsements of two candidates for the 2018 Brevard County School Board elections, David Meader for District 1 and Kelly Damerow for District 5.

The teachers’ union supports Early Release Days every week, higher teacher pay, and continuing pay for teachers who are placed on leave after being accused of wrongdoing towards students.

“We have seen and heard them both publicly support the issues that are closest to our members’ hearts: prioritizing raises for teachers,” BFT stated on its Facebook page. “A commitment to [Student Resource Officers] for our campuses, as well as hardening their perimeters; a promise to lobby the legislature for improved funding for our public schools; and finally, a promise to be transparent and accountable for the decisions which they will make on the school board.”

District 1 candidate David Meader has been a teacher in Brevard County for over 14 years, as well as a former member of the Brevard Federation of Teachers executive board.  District 1 includes Titusville, Mims, Scottsmoor, Port Saint John, Canaveral Groves, Sharpes, and north Cocoa.

District 5 candidate Kelly Damerow is a former Brevard County teacher who later became a lawyer. District 5 includes Palm Bay, West Melbourne, and portions of Melbourne.
