State Road 528 Re-Opened After Deputy Involved Accident

COCOA, Florida – Cocoa police are investigating a single vehicle crash involving a motor deputy from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

At approximately 2:15 p.m.  on Thursday, patrol officers and fire rescue personnel responded to the eastbound lanes of State Road 528 just east of the Industry Road/SR524 exit for a reported motorcycle crash.
When officers arrived, they located a BCSO motor deputy in the median with injuries. The deputy was conscious, alert and able to speak. He was airlifted to the trauma hospital as a precaution. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
State Road 528 was shut down in both directions while emergency crews worked the incident.  All lanes have since been reopened.
According to multiple witnesses the motor deputy had activated his lights and was attempting to stop a vehicle.
The witnesses described the motorcycle as “wobbling” several times before it hit a dead animal in the roadway causing the deputy to lose control.
The deputy ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the median.
CPD traffic officers responded to document the crash scene, interview witnesses and take appropriate measurements.
