Four Brevard Public Schools Teachers To Face Suspension, Termination

Teachers from Jefferson Middle School, Central Middle School, Endeavour Elementary, and Riviera Elementary will face disciplinary actions ranging from suspension to terminations at a Brevard County School Board meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

Marta MacCullagh, a 2nd grade teacher at Endeavour Elementary Magnet School in Cocoa, Florida, is charged with violation of the District’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy.

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins recommended that the Board approve the termination of Ms. MacCullagh to be effective January 22, 2019.

Kurt Kaufman, a Physical Education teacher at Central Middle School in West Melbourne, Florida, is charged with violation of the District’s Standards of Ethical Conduct and Student Supervision and Welfare policies.

Superintendent Mullins recommended that the Board approve the termination of Mr. Kaufman to be effective January 22, 2019.

Kaufman was arrested and charged with battery after he allegedly grabbed a 14-year-old male student after the student was late to class in October 2018.

Police say that Kaufman grabbed the 8th grader in the chest area, he lifted him off the ground and shoved him out of a room and into a hallway.

Florida Department of Education teacher disciplinary records show that Kaufman was fined $500 in 2006 for failing to disclose a 2000 battery arrest to which he later plead no contest in 2002 on his teacher certificate application filed in 2005.

Michael Ray Hernacki, a former kindergarten at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida is charged with insubordination, willful neglect of duty and misconduct.

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins recommended to the Board that Hernacki serve two days suspension.

Hernacki’s teaching certificate is currently placed on probation by the Florida Department of Education for allegedly placing his hand on a kindergartner’s chest and yelling excessively while close to the child’s face in May 2017 and another incident in October 2016 where he picked up a child by his arms, pulled his shirt, and yelling excessively while close to the child’s face.

Hernacki’s probation terms prohibit him from teaching pre-K, kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade for two years.

Thomas A. Strain, a Business Education Teacher at Jefferson Middle School in Merritt Island, Florida, is charged with violation of the District’s Ethics Policy, Student Supervision and Welfare Policy and the Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in the State of Florida.

Superintendent Mullins recommended to the Board that Strain serve two days suspension.

Strain rose from the position of teacher at Rockledge High School to the position of Assistant Principal at Jackson Middle School in August 2017, but was reclassified as a teacher again at Jefferson Middle School in August 2018.
