NEW YORK, New York – The large balloons in the 2019 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take flight after strong winds forecasted for today made their fate uncertain, the NYPD announced this morning.
Safety protocols require that the large parade balloons be grounded if winds exceed 23 mph or gusts of 34 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, winds are forecast to be 23 mph with 36 mph gusts at the Macy’s Parade start time of 9 a.m. which put the balloon in jeopardy of being grounded.
“Hey Astronaut Snoopy, we are clear for take-off!” NYPD tweeted this morning.
“Did you know that each balloon at the Thanksgiving Day Parade has an NYPD supervisor assigned to it? They train with @Macys to ensure the safety of everyone, and they have given us the “all clear” for this morning!”
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade starts at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 23, 2019. The three-hour event will be broadcast on NBC.
This year, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day will feature 16 giant character balloons, 40 novelty balloons, heritage balloons, balloonicles, balloonheads, and trycaloons.
New giant character balloons joining the line-up this year include Astronaut Snoopy by Peanuts Worldwide, Green Eggs and Ham by Netflix, and SpongeBob SquarePants & Gary by Nickelodeon.
In celebration of his 75th birthday, a heritage balloon and fan-favorite will return to the Parade as Smokey Bear once again takes to the skies over Manhattan.
Returning giant balloon characters include Diary of A Wimpy Kid, Sinclair Oil’s DINO, The Elf on the Shelf, Goku, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, Jett by Super Wings, Olaf from Disney’s “Frozen 2”, Chase from PAW Patrol, Pikachu from Pokémon; Pillsbury Doughboy, Power Rangers Mighty Morphin Red Ranger, Ronald McDonald, and Trolls.
Completing the inflatable lineup is the famed Aflac Duck, Sinclair Oil’s Baby DINOs and the Go Bowling balloonicles, as well as Universal Orlando Resort’s The Nutcracker.
