Patrick Air Force Base To Become Space Force Base

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Florida – President Trump signed the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act into law today which establishes the U.S. Space Force as the sixth Armed Service of the United States.

Patrick Air Force Base is one of five named Air Force bases that will be redesignated as Space Force bases, General Jay Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command, said during a press briefing on Friday.

Patrick will be the first Space Force base east of the Mississippi. The other redesignated Space Force bases are Peterson, Schriever, and Buckley Air Force Bases in Colorado and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Personnel within the 45th Space Wing are among 16,000 active-duty airmen and civilians who were assigned to the Air Force Space Command but are now assigned to the United States Space Force.

“Effective immediately, consider yourselves Airmen assigned to the United States Space Force,” Chief Master Sergeant Scott J. King, Command Chief of the 45th Space Wing said in a joint statement with Brigadier General Douglass A. Schiess, Commander of the 45th Space Wing on Friday.

“As we progress through this exciting time, more guidance will come out regarding future actions but, for the foreseeable future, there are not expected to be any large changes to the way we operate here on the Space Coast,” the 45th Space Wing stated.

While independent, the U.S. Space Force is nested within the Department of the Air Force, much as the Marine Corps is connected to the Department of the Navy.

“Because space is the world’s newest warfighting domain. Amid grave threats to our national security, American superiority in space is absolutely vital. And we’re leading, but we’re not leading by enough. But very shortly, we’ll be leading by a lot,” President Trump said during the signing of the NDAA.

“The Space Force will help us deter aggression and control the ultimate high ground.”
