VIERA, Florida – An estimated 5,000 gallons of raw sewage was spilled Friday morning at the Brevard County South Central Wastewater Treatment Plant located on North Wickham Road in Viera, Florida.
At approximately 8:45 a.m. on January 17, 2020, county workers were performing preventive maintenance on the influent fine screens and the emergency stops were pushed-in (disabled) for safety.
After completion of the maintenance, the emergency stops were not reset which caused the channel to backup and overflow the headworks.
The spill ceased around 9 a.m.
Approximately 5,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled, the County reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
According to the County, the spill was contained on site and areas were washed down and bleach was applied to sanitize the area.
Last month, 180,000 gallons of raw sewage was spilled off of Wickham Road in Viera.
