Lines Grow Longer As All Publix Stores Open Later

LAKELAND, Florida – All Publix stores and pharmacies began opening later starting on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

Publix supermarkets will now open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Publix pharmacies will now open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

“We have adjusted the hours of all Publix locations. Thank you for your understanding as we provide our store teams additional time to conduct preventive sanitation and to restock our shelves,” Publix announced on Tuesday.

809 of Publix’s 1,243 stores are located in Florida. The remaining stores are in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

While store hours grow shorter, lines continue to grow longer each morning outside Publix supermarkets as shoppers compete with one another for scarce household essentials like meat, bread, dairy, and toilet paper that are often sold out before noon due to panic buying caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

In Cocoa Beach, Florida, the early morning shoppers are mostly senior citizen residents who have to beat Spring Breakers and daytrippers who arrive in town between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to go to the beach and clear out local grocery store shelves during their visit.

Not since the long gas lines during the energy crisis in 1979 has the American consumer experienced long-term commodity shortages that are occurring during the coronavirus pandemic.
