Gender Reveal Party Sparks Florida Brush Fire

GRANT-VALKARIA, Florida – A gender reveal party where parents, friends and family find out the sex of a baby sparked a 10-acre brush fire in Brevard County, Florida on Saturday, March 28, 2020.

The brush fire was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 4000 block of Adkins Avenue.

The fast-moving fire threatened nearby structures at one point.

But the Florida Forestry Service, Brevard County Fire Rescue, and Palm Bay Fire Department crews were able to ultimately contain the brush fire to 10 acres and saved the nearby structures.

Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer told WESH 2 that Tannerite and a firearm was used for the gender reveal, which sparked the blaze.

A gender reveal party in Arizona that also used Tannerite and a firearm sparked a massive wildfire in 2017.

Brevard County was placed under a burn ban the day before on March 27 which prohibited open burnings and the sale and use of fireworks.
