MERRITT ISLAND, Florida – According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a fatal crash occurred at 12:40 a.m. this morning on State Road 520 (Merritt Island Causeway) near the intersection of Myrtice Avenue in Merritt Island, Florida which is on the Merritt Island side of the Hubert Humphrey Bridge.

55-year-old Robert Houghton of Merritt Island was driving his 2003 Chevy SUV eastbound on State Road 520 when it crashed head on with a 2003 Chevy pickup heading westbound.  Houghton was killed as a result of the crash.

The SUV’s passenger, 54-year-old Helen Rhodes of Cocoa Beach, Florida, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

The driver of the pickup, 40-year-old Timothy Scott Key of Rockledge, Florida, also suffered serious injuries and was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
