MERRITT ISLAND, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that both east and westbound lanes of State Road 528 (also known as the Beachline) are shut down near the intersection of North Banana River Drive in Merritt Island, Florida.
The road has been shut down due to a possible fatal accident which occurred at around 2:25 a.m. this morning.
Drivers who are headed eastbound on State Road 528 toward Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, or Cocoa Beach should head south on State Road 3 (Courtney Parkway) in Merritt Island to State Road 520. Head east on State Road 520 to State Road A1A. Then north on A1A to Port Canaveral or Cape Canaveral.
Drivers headed westbound should also use State Road 520 as an alternate route to State Road 3, then back to State Road 528. UPDATE: Eastbound has reopened. Westbound remains closed.
UPDATE #2: All lanes of traffic have reopened.
