Newspaper Publishes Map of Schools Without Security
An Iowa newspaper is facing an uproar following its publication of an interactive map which showed schools that did and did not have school resource officers or similar campus security.
The Des Moines Register, a Gannett Company newspaper, has since removed the interactive map in the wake of the criticism that continues on its article page.
This is not the first time a newspaper has been accused of endangering people’s lives for the sake of sensational journalism following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Another Gannett newspaper, The Journal News, ran a controversial articlewith an online map of gun permit holders’ home addresses in the New York counties of Westchester, Putnam, and Rocklandon on its website LoHud.com.
Second Amendment gun ownership advocates struck back at the paper by publishing the alleged personal addresses and information of employees of The Journal News and its parent company Gannett, which also owns USA TODAY and FLORIDA TODAY.
