TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Florida Governor Rick Scott today announced that 32,400 private-sector jobs were created in Florida last month and the state’s March 2013 unemployment rate decreased 0.3 percentage points to 7.5 percent (seasonally adjusted). This is Florida’s lowest unemployment rate since October 2008 and the second largest drop in the nation as of February 2013.
“It is great news that our unemployment rate is below the national average at 7.5 percent and that we created more than 32,000 jobs in March,” Governor Scott said. “In a little over two years since I’ve taken office, we’ve created more than 320,000 private sector jobs – and we are now closing in on the halfway point to our goal of creating 700,000 jobs in seven years. These numbers prove that IT’S WORKING in Florida and our families have opportunities to live their version of the American Dream in the Sunshine State. In Florida, our economy is turning around because we focus every day on creating new jobs for our families.”
Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 7,507,100 in March 2013, an increase of 32,700 jobs (+0.4 percent) over the month. The number of jobs in the state was up 141,300 from March 2012, an increase of 1.9 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs was up 1.4 percent over the year.
Florida’s unemployment rate matched that of the U.S. in February. All numbers released are known as U-3, which consists of total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force

The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) on Florida’s Space Coast dropped to 7.4% in March 2013 from 8.0% in February 2013, but is still higher than that of the Florida statewide unemployment rate of 7% (not seasonally adjusted). March’s Brevard County unemployment rate is two percentage points lower from a year ago.
In March 2013, total non-agricultural employment in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metro area was 196,900. Total non-agricultural employment increased by 1.3 percent over the year. Statewide employment increased by 1.9 percent over the same time period.
Out of a labor force of 265,230, there were 19,646 unemployed Brevard County residents in March.
Total non-agricultural employment increased by 2,600 jobs over the year in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metro area.
Job gains on the Space Coast were led by leisure (+900 jobs) and education and health (+800). Other industries that gained jobs over the year included mining, logging, and construction (+600 jobs) and professional and business services (+400 jobs); and other services (+200 jobs).
Manufacturing (-200 jobs) and and trade, transportation, and utilities (-100 jobs) the only industries to lose jobs in the region over the year.
