COCOA BEACH, Florida – NOAA wave models for Hurricane Joaquin promise ideal wave and swell conditions for surfers off of Florida’s east coast on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 

Major Hurricane Joaquin will remain well east of Florida as it lifts northward from the central Bahamas into this weekend. Large swells generated from this system will lead to an increasing threat for hazardous surf and marine conditions, especially into this weekend along the east coast of Florida. 

The main concerns will be large-breaking waves along the coast that will lead to very rough surf and a high threat for strong and life-threatening rip currents. In addition, these large swells will be able to produce minor to moderate beach erosion at the coast through the weekend, as well as hazardous boating conditions.


Long period swells are already generating rough surf and a high risk for rip currents along area beaches today. If heading to the beach use caution if entering the water and always swim near a lifeguard.
