BPS To Keep Transgender Bathroom Policy Despite Trump's Reversal

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida – Brevard County Public School’s policy permitting the use of bathrooms that do not match the biological sex of transgender students will remain unchanged despite President Donald Trump’s revocation of the Obama administration’s policy last week.
“This policy [t]hat was passed by BPS was in regards to equal opportunity; it is not about bathroom or locker room use,” Brevard Public Schools spokesperson, Matt Reed, wrote in a statement. “As with any incident that occurs at school, should bathroom or locker room issues arise these situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis.”
Although BPS’s official statement echoes the same claim made by former School Board Member Amy Kneessy that the policy was not about bathrooms, the below video shows that Brevard Public School Board Members Andy Ziegler, Amy Kneesy, and Misty Belford did discuss transgenders in school bathrooms during the final School Board vote on equal rights for transgenders.
The policy was approved last year by a 3-2 vote with Ziegler, Kneesy, and Belford voting for transgender rights while Board Members John Craig and Karen Henderson voted against the policy.
