MIAMI, Florida – NOAA’s National Hurricane Center issued Public Advisory at 5 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Saturday, August 15, 2020, due to the presence of Tropical Storm Kyle (formerly Invest 96L) that is tracking off of Rhode Island.
Kyle is the earliest “K” storm on record in the Atlantic Basin. The prior record was held by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Tropical Storm Kyle is located about 280 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island, and is moving to the east-northeast at 21 mph (33 km/h).
NHC forecasters say that this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.
A turn to the east along with an increase in forward speed is expected early next week.
Spaghetti models are in tight agreement that Tropical Storm Kyle will move east-northeastward across the open Atlantic.
The European model (orange triangle) and UK model (blue square) are the southern outliers.
The NHC forecast (red circle) is near the tightly clustered track guidance.
Tropical Storm Kyle has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h), with higher gusts.
Some additional strengthening is possible during the next day or so.
Kyle is forecast to become post-tropical on Sunday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) to the north of the tropical cyclone’s center.
NOAA and Colorado State University forecast an “extremely active” 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June 1 through November 30.
