PALM BAY, Florida – An explosion occurred around 10:45 a.m. at the FAR, Inc. chemical plant near the intersection of Conlan Boulevard NE and U.S. 1 in Palm Bay, Florida on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
The flammable agent believed to be involved in the explosion and the ensuing inferno is 99% isopropyl alcohol.
Residents in both Melbourne and Palm Bay are reporting on social media that they felt shockwaves and/or heard the explosion from miles away.
Palm Bay Police, Palm Bay Fire Department, and Brevard County Fire Rescue crews have responded to the scene.
Melbourne Police and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies are providing assistance with traffic control in the surrounding area.
U.S. 1 was shut down south of University Boulevard but has since re-opened.
“ADVISORY! Palm Bay PD is asking residents to stay out of the area surrounding US1 and Conlan. We have received reports of an explosion in the area and have teams working the scene,” the Palm Bay Police Department stated on its Facebook page.

No injuries were reported.
