NOAA: Tropical Storm Beta Track Update, Spaghetti Models

MIAMI, Florida – NOAA’s National Hurricane Center issued a Public Advisory at 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Monday, September 21, 2020, due to the presence of Tropical Storm Beta (formerly Invest 90L and Tropical Depression Twenty-two) over the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Beta is located about 70 miles southeast of Port O’Connor, Texas, and is moving to the west-northwest at 6 mph (9 km/h).

NHC forecasters say that this general motion is forecast to continue during the next day or so.

A decrease in forward speed and a sharp turn to the north and northeast is expected on Tuesday.

On the official NHC forecast track, the center of Beta will continue to move toward the central coast of Texas and will likely move inland by tonight.

Beta is forecast to remain close to the coast of southeastern Texas on Tuesday.

Spaghetti models are in general agreement that Beta will slowly track west-northwestward over the Gulf of Mexico towards Texas.

The official NHC track is largely an update of the previous one and remains near the various consensus aids.

Tropical Storm Beta has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (985 km/h), with higher gusts.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km) from the center of the cyclone.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Port Aransas, Texas to Morgan City, Louisiana.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Baffin Bay to Port Aransas, Texas.

The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season occurred on September 10 when tropical cyclone activity significantly increases, according to NOAA and the National Weather Service’s historical hurricane activity data.
