NOAA: Tropical Storm Nana Projected Path, Spaghetti Models

MIAMI, Florida – NOAA’s National Hurricane Center issued Public Advisory at 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, due to the presence of Tropical Storm Nana (formerly Invest 99L and Potential Tropical Cyclone 16) over the Caribbean.

Nana is located about 305 miles east of Belize City and is moving to the west at 18 mph (30 km/h).

NHC forecasters say this general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected to continue through today.

A westward or west-southwestward motion is expected tonight and Thursday.

On the official NHC forecast track, Nana will track near but north of the coast of Honduras today and likely approach the coast of Belize tonight and early Thursday.

Spaghetti models are in strong agreement that Nana will track in a  westerly direction over the Caribbean Sean towards Belize and just north of the Honduran coast.

The new NHC forecast track is similar to the previous advisory track and lies very close to the latest Florida State University Superensemble prediction.

Tropical Storm Nana has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 km/h), with higher gusts.

Additional strengthening is forecast and Nana could become a Category 1 hurricane later today or tonight before it reaches the coast of Belize.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km), mainly to the northeast through the northwest of the tropical cyclone’s center.

Tropical Storm Nana Watches and Warnings

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the entire coast of Belize.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Yucatan, Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, and the entire coast of Belize.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Caribbean Sea coast of Guatemala,  the northern coast of Honduras from Punta Patuca westward to the Guatemala border, Roatan Island, and the Bay Islands of Honduras.

NOAA forecasts an ‘above-normal’ 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June 1 through November 30.
