MIAMI, Florida – NOAA’s National Hurricane Center issued Public Advisory at 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, due to the presence of Tropical Storm Omar (formerly Invest 90L) over the Caribbean.
Omar is the earliest 15th named storm on record in the Atlantic Hurricane Basin. The previous record was held by Ophelia in 2005 which occurred a week later.
Omar is located about 225 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and is moving to the east-northeast at 15 mph (24 km/h).
NHC forecasters say this general motion is forecast through Wednesday, followed by a turn toward the east by Thursday.
On the official NHC forecast track, Omar will continue to move away from North Carolina.
Spaghetti models are in general agreement that Omar will track to the east-northeast away from North Carolina.
Tropical Storm Omar has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h), with higher gusts.
Little change in strength is expected overnight, following by weakening beginning on Wednesday night.
Omar is expected to degenerate into a remnant area of low pressure by late Thursday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center of the tropical cyclone.
NOAA forecasts an ‘above-normal’ 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June 1 through November 30.
