Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey holds a press conference at the scene of a shooting in Melbourne Beach, Florida.
MELBOURNE BEACH, Florida – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident that occurred Saturday evening in unincorporated Melbourne Beach, Florida that left one person dead and another in critical condition.
Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Spessard Holland Park at approximately 6:30 p.m., after the Sheriff’s Office was advised that a male had been shot.
As deputies were responding to the scene, they encountered a vehicle on the U.S. 192 causeway just on the east side of the bridge where they were being flagged down.
The deputies stopped at that scene and found out that there was a second individual that had been shot as well.
A truck that had fled from the scene that investigators believe carried the shooters away was later stopped with the assistance of Palm Bay and Melbourne police.
The occupants fled, and two of those occupants were taken into custody.
The first male victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The second victim was located and was pronounced deceased.
“From everything our investigation has shown us so far, this activity is all gang-related,” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said during a press conference.
Agents from the Homicide and Crime Scene Units are currently in the process of interviewing potential witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the victims at this time. Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that this was a targeted attack and there is no danger to the general public.
